Brave Man Jumps Into Water to Save Woman After She Was Attacked By Bull Shark

Mangyon Zhang, 57, never thought a shark swimming in shallow water would attack her, but that’s what happened on Friday afternoon in Bundeena, Australia, before a passerby came to her rescue. Blake Donaldson was enjoying the beach with his partner nearby when he heard Mangyon’s cries. If it wasn’t for him, Mangyon could have lost her life.

A shark encounter wasn’t what anyone anticipated on that sunny day. There had not been a shark bite in the Bundeena area since 1927, and the water was somewhat clear.

Mangyon Was Going For a Quick After-Lunch Swim

“I was so scared. I said, ‘Oh, what’s that?’ ” said Mangyon, who was going for a quick after-lunch swim. “And then I just saw… lots and lots of blood coming out, and the water just became too red and red and red. I was so scared by then.”

Mangyon didn’t actually see the shark, but she knew what must have happened when she saw how much blood was in the water. She froze, immediately fearing for her life. She started looking around, crying and screaming for help.

Blake Leaped Into the Water

Blake, disregarding his safety, leaped into the water on his paddleboard and brought her to shore, where it was revealed that she had a 15-inch bite mark on her leg.

“I just [had] to jump in,” Blake said. “The fight or flight kicks in, and I just made the decision, sure there could be a shark but my reaction was, ‘I just have to save this woman.’”

The Battle Isn’t Over Yet

On shore, the woman was losing consciousness. She had lost a deadly amount of blood. Blake’s partner, Ellen Melchert, gave Mangyon CPR.

“All of a sudden, I see all of these colors and I can’t see anything else. I think I heard people say, ‘She doesn’t have any pulse,' ” she said.

Blake called for paramedics, and Mangyon was airlifted to a hospital.

The Pair Were Reunited One Month Later

The pair reunited one month after the accident. Mangyon thanked Blake, calling him her “lifesaver.”

“Nah, you don’t have to thank me,” he said with a laugh.

Like the good Samaritan in the Book of Luke, Blake didn’t hesitate to help someone in need. His quick actions helped save her life–and her leg.
