Mother Jumps Out of Window to Escape House Fire While 7 Months Pregnant With Twins

One expectant Tennessee mom did the unthinkable when she was caught in a deadly house fire. When faced with no other choice, the mother jumped out of a window two stories above the ground.

Brave Expectant Mother Jumps Out of Window In House Fire

Katie Barker was seven months pregnant with twin boys when she awoke to a house fire on September 15th. As flames blocked her exit, she was faced with a choice no mother ever wants to make.

“It was either risk breaking bones or plan a funeral,” said Katie. “I have an older daughter, a 6-year-old, and then two little boys that are in my belly that are counting on me, and I couldn’t leave my husband, so I didn’t.”

“I just kind of leaned out the window on my side, and I landed on my knee and my hip and my back,” she said.

Officers were already at the scene and tried to ease her landing. When Katie told them her father-in-law was still inside, the officers rushed in.

"As soon as I told the officers, without hesitation or any kind of protection, they ran into the basement, to the den, the bottom, and they got him out,” Katie said.

Bones Were Broken, but The Babies are Alright

Katie’s babies are alright from the fall, but Katie suffered a “broken pelvis, compressed vertebrae and severe smoke inhalation.”

“I wish I had stuck the landing a little better,” Katie joked.

“My muscles in my right leg don’t want to work completely,” Katie says, but she will soon start physical therapy to learn to walk again.

“Every building, rewiring, everything that was in the kitchen was completely – it’s ashes now,” Katie said.

Everyone in the home survived, except for the family’s three pet cats. It’s unclear what started the fire, but the family believes it was likely an electrical fault.

Thank God that Katie had the bravery she needed to jump out of that window—and that her little babies will be just fine!
