The Great Bible

The Great Bible

• The Great Bible borrowed heavily from the Tyndale Bible but made revisions to remove objectionable content.

• Since Tyndale's Bible was incomplete, Coverdale completed the translation of the remaining Old Testament books and Apocrypha using the Latin Vulgate and German translations instead of the original Greek, Hebrew, and Aramaic texts.
• Despite its name referring to its size, it has been known by various other names such as
◦ the King's Bible (authorized by Henry VIII),
◦ the Cromwell Bible (directed by Thomas Cromwell),
◦ and the Chained Bible (chained to prevent removal from churches).
• The Great Bible played a significant role in the spread of the English Reformation and the establishment of the Church of England.
• The last edition of the Great Bible was published in 1569, with over 30 editions released between 1539 and 1569, totaling more than 9,000 printed copies by 1541.
