Life can be an unfun and punishing experience at times. It can feel that every choice, every option and every decision is nothing but a lose-lose proposition. Regardless of how much life may leave us bloodied and bruised, giving up is the worst decision anyone could make.

“Up,” a song by Tauren Wells, is an upbeat and catchy tune that encourages listeners to keep striving, to keep moving forward and to never, ever give up.

As the first verse points out, life, at times, is tough on everyone – from the people on Wall Street to the guy on main street running a barber shop. Everyone has obligations and demands in life that can be totally overwhelming.

The song’s chorus also mentions that pressure, as much as it may hurt, can produce something good and it will happen if we hold on and persevere.

“Keep your head high, keep on fighting
Cause the pressure makes a diamond
Tomorrow’s a new day”

Much like the chorus to the song states, God’s Word also mentions that trials of any kind are not wasted but instead opportunities for growth. Romans 5:3-4, reads, “And not only so, but we glory in tribulations also: knowing that tribulation works patience; And patience, experience; and experience, hope:”

Yes, these tough times are, for the most part, out of our control. No one enjoys hardship. But even when we do not have total power over the situation, there are still things we can do.

The song mentions that negativity is never helpful, especially in trying times. So, in those instances, turn off the TV news broadcast. The news always seems to focus its attention on death and destruction. We do have a remote control. Change the channel or better yet, turn off the TV altogether.

James 1:12 “There is a blessing on the man who undergoes testing; because, if he has God’s approval, he will be given the crown of life, which the Lord has said he will give to those who have love for him.”
