Pilgrim's Progress - The Valley of the Shadow of Death
Just as Christian begins to pass through the Valley of the Shadow of Death on the way to the Celestial City, he meets a pair of men who are retreating. The men tell him the dark and smoky valley is filled with frightful creatures and wailing people bound in irons, all blanketed in a cloud of confusion. They warn him not to go but Christian continues.
In the valley, Christian walks on a narrow path surrounded on one side by a bottomless swamp and on the other by a deep ditch "into which the blind have led the blind". In the darkness, Christian walks slowly, since falling off the path into either side results in death.
Christian eventually reaches the gates of Hell. Thoroughly frightened, he uses his only useful weapon, All-prayer, which blankets him in protection. Dreadful creatures surround him and blasphemies cloud his head. However he continues onward as he hears someone reciting comforting Bible verses and daylight appears.
