Perhaps, the saddest reality of the Israelites is that, in their rebellion, they thought they were all right. They thought that because they were God's chosen people, He would not allow anything truly devastating to happen to them. And that is the most dangerous spirit in the church today. Many of us are so assured not only of our own righteousness, but of our own rightness, that we have blinded ourselves to the danger that we are in. The believers at Corinth thought the same thing. That is why Paul warned them, "Let him that thinketh he standeth take heed lest he fall."
