A beautiful building which dominates the town centre,one of only a few left of the medieval period.
Founded by Benedict (Abbot) in 1069, William The Conqueror era,the stone was transported quite a few miles by specially dug water ways from the village of Monk Fryston.
The building itself is of many different styles,Norman,Gothic and Victorian,has had two big fires,1340 & 1906,but with millions presantly being spent on restoration work,I am sure it will be here for another thousand years.
