Over a third of Americans believe natural disasters are evidence of the end times (Second Coming Watch Update #284)

1. According to Religion News Service, more than a third of Americans believe the severity of recent natural disasters is evidence that we are in the "end times" described in the New Testament -- a period of turmoil preceding Jesus' Second Coming and the end of the world. Daniel Cox, a research director at the Public Religion Research Institute, stated "There is a significant proportion of Americans who see these phenomena through a theological lens. It's hardly a fringe belief. It's nearly four in 10 Americans who are embracing this."

According to The Times of Israel, a new poll shows that for the first time since 2006, more West Bank Palestinians support the militant approach of Hamas as opposed to that of Fatah and its leader, Mah-moud Abbas. An overwhelming majority of Palestinians also believe the results of the latest Hamas-Israel escalation that included Operation Pillar of Defense prove that the armed struggle represents the best path to Palestinian independence.

According to Reuters, Syrian Vice President Farouq (FA-ROOK) al-Sha-raa has told a Lebanese newspaper that neither the forces of President Ba-shar al-Ass-ad nor the rebels can win the war in Syria. The newspaper released only limited excerpts from the interview, and it was far from clear that Sha-raa’s comments represented the view of the government...
