When the plague first came to the village of Eyam it was each man for himself, and many left. But then at a public meeting it was pointed out that if they all left to save themselves, then the plague would be spread to the surrounding villages and possibly to the whole country. The people then regarded it as their Christian duty not to spread the plague to other people, so without fences or guards they stayed in the village and hundreds of them died
