God can’t move unless we show up

There are so many instances in scripture where God showed His mighty power and all it took was for the faithful of His kingdom to simply show up. One of the most popular Bible stories of all time illustrates this perfectly, David versus Goliath. The Israelite army all trembled in fear at the sight of the behemoth Goliath as he taunted their nation and God for several days. Then along comes a shepherd boy named David who decided that all God needed was just someone to show up and let Him show off. Small in stature but experienced in showing up and letting God work through him (killed a lion and bear in the past) David simple let God fight the battle through Him. In fact in 1 Samuel 17:47 David said, “All those gathered here will know that is not by sword or spear that he LORD saves; for the battle is the LORD’s, and he will give all you into our hands.” (NIV) David understood that someone had to show up to allow God to work through them. We see later in David’s life that not showing up got him and the nation of Israel in trouble (2 Samuel 11:1), when it was time for the king to go to war he decided to stay home and it lead to Him falling into both adultery and murder and opened his life to be judged by God instead of used by God. Same man, two very different results based on his willingness to show up for God.

Could the American church have found itself in a situation where it has simply stopped showing up? A generation an ago you didn’t have to wonder if families was going to be in church on Sunday morning, you knew they was going to be there. You didn’t have wonder if they were reading and studying the Bible in their home everyone knew it was the standard of being a disciple of Christ. You didn’t have to wonder if their family prayed together daily because every Christian family knew that is what you did every day. The church showed up daily and allowed God to work through them, it didn’t matter what was going on around them they kept showing up and letting God fight their battles. I am afraid that the modern church may have decided that it isn’t worth showing up anymore. They are committed to show up for the things of this world such as ball games, practices, hobbies, vacations, jobs, etc, but they are not committed to show up for the things of God. We stopped showing up to fight the giants of our time an decided it would be easier to set at home and let someone else fight the battles for us (just as David did.) Wake up church and realize that Christianity is not a spectator sport, we must show up every day and get involved so that God can work through us. So today we ask are you someone who shows up all the time, some of the time, or have you just stopped showing up at all? This family chooses to show up daily and we encourage you to the same.
