Customers Buy Out Donut Shop So Owner Can Care For Sick Wife

Customers were quick to buy out this donut shop. The reason? It’s not just the tasty glazed pastries that brought them in, but an opportunity to send the owner home early so he can care for his sick wife.

Donut City is a little shop in CA owned by John and Stella Chan. They’ve been serving up tasty treats in this area for over 30 years. When the community heard Mrs. Chan was at home in recovery from a brain aneurysm, they collectively came up with a plan to help. Knowing this small business still needed to make it’s daily sales, they stepped up to buy Mr. Chan out of his supply each morning so that he could go home and care for Stella. Locals by the dozens bought dozens of donuts at a time. Lines were out the door early in the morning. One customer even stated having bought 300 donuts at a previous visit!

“Seeing everyone this morning, and being able to help out, it’s like honestly being able to see a little piece of heaven!”

The heartfelt gesture ensured Mr. Chan’s stock of fresh baked goodies were completely bought out by 7am! Customers were actually having to be turned away by the grateful owner! “I grew up in a family business... I know what it’s like when you can’t close the business down because you need to have the income to support your family but at the same time you want to be with your family. It means a lot to me that other people are willing to do that for a local business.” shared one customer with Inside Edition.

The collective care of this community showed how effective we can be when working together to make a difference in someone's life. Donut City and the Chans were well cared for thanks to these fine folks. When asked by a customer how is wife was doing, Mr. Chan did report Stella was getting better. It doesn’t take much to show you care for someone, it can be as simple as buying a dozen donuts (or 3 dozen)!
