Heartbroken Couple Shares Stillbirth Story to Inspire Others

This is a heartbreaking video, but it's a must-see. So grab some tissues, and make sure you watch all the way to the end for an amazing show of God's love in the midst of tragedy!

When the couple Katelyn and Michael Alsop went in for their 20-week ultrasound, they were eager to see their growing baby and find out the sex. Michael played with their toddler in the examining room. Katelyn filmed the daddy-daughter antics as the family giggled in anticipation. This video would show the last happy, carefree moment the family would share before world as they knew it was wrecked.

The ultrasound technician stepped away to grab the doctor for the results but seemed to be gone for an unusually long time--so long that Katelyn began to worry. Michael assured her that the doctor was probably just held up. But when then their doctor entered the room “and basically shattered so many of our dreams within just a few minutes. The words that haunt me are, ‘I'm concerned, your baby is very sick'," said Katelyn.

In that moment their world completely changed. Now the couple is sharing their stillbirth story in hopes that it will inspire others who may be facing unexpected battles in their life. “The Story of James Michael” is a video project that shares the emotional journey that impacted this family’s faith in an overwhelming way.

Doctors thought the baby would survive 3-4 weeks. The couple named their baby James, but Katelyn would continue to carry him for another 11 weeks, all the while knowing he would never take a breath once she delivered him. Michael shared, “we kept saying, and we would say it almost every night as we were praying . . . 'God we’re gonna love him while we have him.'”

When baby James was born, the family were surrounded by close friends, including a friend who agreed to photograph their short time together in the delivery room. Doctors had prepared them that due to the swelling they might not get to even see James’ face. But Katelyn’s prayer was answered. “Jesus, just let us see his face. Please just let us see his little face.” Due to baby James’ positioning in the womb, his face didn’t swell as expected and they were able to experience the beauty of seeing their son that they had prayed so fervently for.

Katelyn points to James 1:2-4 on her Katelyn James Photography blog: “Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.”

“It’s hard to understand a verse like that in the midst of normal life. Little trials that are annoying and frustrating seem pointless…. but when you experience tragedy, it almost seems easier to realize that God has a purpose in it, because there is no other explanation. There isn’t any other type of hope that can come from losing a child. After experiencing a stillbirth and the journey that we just walked through with James, I can honestly say that we have never known the Lord more intimately.”

For Katelyn and Michael, this hard journey has had extreme ups and downs but drew them closer to their faith. They knew that God had a plan and are excited to help encourage others with their story. Watch and be inspired by this godly couple's incredible faith. Again, make sure you watch all the way through to the end because the last moment of this video shows how this faithful family truly puts their trust in Jesus. This is one surprise in the midst of a dark season that will leave you in tears!

We lift up this family in our prayers and hope that they will continue to see God’s hand in their life as they enter this new season in their lives!
