Teacher Surprises Homeless Teen With A Place Of His Own

One teacher went above and beyond when she surprised a homeless man with a place of his own! Needing a support system, this teacher and the surrounding community came together to help out this man when he was down on his luck.

Amonte Green is a former student of Kate Demory, and he has kept in touch with her even after he left school. After getting mixed up in some trouble, Green had to spend a month in jail. Since his mom had died when he was in high school, he had no home to go back to when he was released. At just 20 years old, the young man found himself homeless with no place to go.

“I have always been the type of person to try and figure out things by myself, I never ask for help,” said Amonte. “But when it comes down to it, to being an adult…I finally realized that I can’t do it by myself.”

That’s when he reached out to his former teacher, Mrs. Demory. She recalls the night when he called her, knowing that she had to help him out in some way.

“That night when he called me, we were celebrating my daughter’s 12th birthday. And it was pretty late, it was 8:30,” Kate says. “He had spent most of the day trying to find someone to help him. I knew if he was calling me, he probably really needed the help.”

After their phone call, Kate went to help Amonte gather his belongings. Realizing that the young man was in need of a stable environment, she brought him home to stay with her family.

Kate started a GoFundMe account for Amonte, and the community came through for him. People donated money to help him get on his feet, and he was even offered a landscaping job!

After 2 weeks of living with the Demory family, a space opened up for Amonte to move into at the beginning of August. While he was at work one afternoon, Kate brought volunteers together and they used some of the money that was donated to the GoFundMe account to furnish his new place. When he came back from work that day, he was so surprised to find that he was no longer homeless and had a place to call his own!

““I had no idea that things would move this quickly,” says Green. “I’m very thankful that there’s people in the community that care. They don’t even know me, but they care. It showed me that there’s good people out there that really love to help.”

Now, Amonte is able to support himself and is working on getting his high school equivalency diploma. He even started The Green House, a charity created to help other at-risk young adults.

Since Amonte was generously given help when he needed it most, he wants to do his part to be able to help out others who may be in a similar situation. What a beautiful way to give back!
