The Bible teaches that water baptism is not necessary for salvation (Acts 10:43-48; 1 Cor. 1:17). We are justified before God by faith (Rom. 4:5; Eph. 2:8-9). Since God works covenantally, it is important to understand that water baptism is a covenant sign just like circumcision in the Old Testament. Circumcision was not necessary for salvation in the Old Testament nor is water baptism necessary for salvation today.
