Extra Keys

if you are a born‐again believer, you have been given the keys to the kingdom of heaven. But if you don't know where that place is or what purpose it serves, those keys will just collect dust in an empty corner of your mind.


It's easy to get bogged down with church‐type terminology that seems to have no basis in reality, so think of the kingdom of heaven (or the kingdom of God) as a place in God—a position in a relationship. For example:

I am the husband in my marriage to Sherrel.
I am the father in my immediate‐family relationship with my children.
I am the older brother in my extended‐family relationship with my sisters.

In each of these relationships I occupy a place. I have my own space with my own responsibilities and my own privileges. The same is true in my relationship with God.

I am His son and His heir in my relationship with the Father (see Galatians 4:1–7).
I am His representative here on this earth in my relationship with Jesus (see John 14:12–14).
I am His temple in my relationship with the Holy Spirit (see 1 Corinthians 6:19–20).

Because of the laws in this nation, it is basically impossible for me to abandon my place in my marriage, in my immediate family, or in my extended family. I have both legal and moral obligations to my wife and my children, and to my extended family—to some extent.
