Chris Tomlin is one of the most talented Christian musicians out today. He plays guitar and piano very well and can sing with the best of them! But, I think his greatest strength is in the words that he writes in his songs and how he puts them to melody. There are so many wonderful lyrics that he has written and “How Great Is Our God” is no exception. Here is a look at the lyrics and a quick meditation on them.

Thinking On The Lyrics
This is such an encouraging song. It partners the performer with the people singing as they lift up their voices together to praise God. This song also declares a few truths about God that are worth studying and thinking about. “He wraps himself in Light, and darkness tries to hide and trembles at His voice.” This line can be paralleled with quite a few Bible verses. Here are two verses to think about when you sing this line. “And the demons begged him, saying, ‘If You (Jesus) cast us out, send us into the herd of pigs.’” (Matthew 8:31) The demons did not want to be out in the open because of Jesus so they hid themselves in swine. “You believe that God is one; you do well. Even the demons believe—and shudder!” (James 2:19) How about the line “And time is in His hands.” This fits perfectly with Psalm 31:15a, “My times are in Your hand.” The line, “The Lion and the Lamb” goes well with, “And one of the elders said to me, ‘Weep no more; behold, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has conquered, so that He can open the scroll and its seven seals.’” (Revelation 5:5) and also with, “The next day he saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, ‘Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!’” (John 1:29) These are only a few verses that you can research on your own that go with the lyrics to this song. The point is that Chris Tomlin takes time to sing about the truth straight from the Bible and that is why his songs are so powerful. I get excited every time I sing the chorus because we do serve a very GREAT God!
Conclusion
“How Great Is Our God” is an inspirational song to sing! Think of all the amazing things about Him that make Him so great when you sing it! He is loving, caring, protecting, patient, kind, holy, just, righteous, gentle, in control of all things, wise, omnipotent, omniscient, omnipresent, the victor, creator, sustainer, and so much more! Also, take some time on your own and study the Bible for scriptures that parallel this song. It is a great way to memorize scripture and you will be thinking about the Word while you are singing praises to the Father! God bless you all!
