Crossing Guard Goes the Extra Mile and Helps Child Across Flooded Waters

A Chicago crossing guard goes the extra mile to help kids cross the street after it flooded. It was icy, and he could have slipped himself, but he didn’t care. His sweet gestures touched the hearts of the whole city.

A water break caused flooding on the road. When one kid said she didn’t want to get her clothes wet, the crossing guard, Joe Sass, carried her on his shoulder across the road. When she dropped her water bottle, he even stooped to pick it up. He also held an infant for a mom while she tried to get her stroller through the slush.

“It’s not in the job description, but I’ll do just about anything for these kids,” Joe said.

“Kids also feel so safe when they [see] him. [He puts] smiles on their faces, too. He’s one of the best employees, I would say. A great person,” one parent said.

“I have a lot of experience with my almost-10-year-old,” Joe explained. “I look at it with these kids, I wouldn’t treat them any different than I treat my own daughter… I just try to treat them exactly as I would treat her.”

Loving Your Neighbors Goes a Long Way

Joe’s been a crossing guard for 4.5 years. He’s a friendly face that everyone loves to see.

“Some of these kids I met before they were even at kindergarten… I crossed their older brothers and sisters, and you get to know the parents and the family dogs and just like, see these kids grow up and a big smiley face staring across at you at the crosswalk in the morning… It’s a beautiful thing,” Joe said.

Joe is amazed by the relationships he makes, and so are others. He even helped one boy get a new bike after his was stolen.

“I love my neighbors. To me, I don’t think that I’m doing anything extra to help one of my neighbors or someone in the city for that matter,” Joe said. “Just… love your neighbor and help out when you can.”

The city of Chicago is truly blessed to have Joe as their neighbor. He certainly deserves all of the attention he gets for his efforts!
