When Someone Says 'I Am No Longer a Christian'

When Someone Says 'I Am No Longer a Christian'

Have you ever had someone in your family say, “I’m not a Christian anymore,” or “I don’t believe in God or Scripture”

Those words can hit close to home. When I first heard statements like that from someone I love, it genuinely grieved my heart. It hurt to watch them walk a path away from the faith. But over time, after hearing it again and again, I noticed something unsettling in myself. A quiet complacency began to grow. What once broke my heart slowly became something I just accepted.

And that is dangerous.

Why Is Family Harder Than Strangers?

It often feels easier to share Jesus and our faith and experiences with a stranger than with our own family. Why is that

For many of us, it is tied to fear. Fear of offending them. Fear of damaging the relationship. Fear of saying the wrong thing and making things worse.

Those fears can silence us. And if we are not careful, that silence can turn into acceptance. An internal “oh well” that moves on instead of continuing to contend in prayer and love.

But Scripture calls us to something deeper.

Guarding Our Heart Posture

As believers, we are not called to be passive when someone walks away from the faith, especially when it is someone closest to us. Yes, we grieve. Yes, we love gently. But we also pray persistently, and show up for them as Christ would.

Jesus reminds us of the Father's heart in Luke 15. The shepherd who leaves the 99 to go after the one. The Father who watches the road for his lost son to return. That same heart should shape ours.

The enemy loves to target families. Division, doubt and discouragement are often subtle attacks. But Scripture tells us, “Our struggle is not against flesh and blood” (Ephesians 6:12). This is not a battle we fight with arguments. It is one we fight with prayer, love, truth and perseverance.

We are called to love as Christ loved us. Patiently, sacrificially and without giving up hope.

As Galatians 6:9 encourages us, Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.

Reflection Questions

  1. How do I usually respond internally and externally when someone close to me says they no longer believe?
  2. Read Romans 10:1
  3. Have I grown complacent in prayer for someone who has walked away from the faith?
  4. What would it look like to intentionally re-engage in prayer for them?
  5. Read James 5:16
  6. How can I reflect the heart of Jesus, full of truth and grace, toward my family without fear?
  7. Read Luke 15:20 and Colossians 4:6
