90-Year-Old Navy Veteran Goes Parasailing and Brings His Doctor Along to Fulfill a Promise

A 90-year-old goes parasailing after making a 10-year promise to his granddaughter and his doctor that he would. The senior, Arnold “Sunny” Lokken, is on a mission to stay active, and his family and health team are fully supporting that. The trio had a blast last month out on Fort Myers Beach in Florida last month.

Sunny wanted to parasail to celebrate his 90th birthday. He’s been Dr. Amy Hilde-Philips’ patient for two decades. At one appointment, he told her, "If you get me to 90, you’re coming with me." And she did!

Sunny’s family arranged for Amy to travel with them from Minnesota to Florida to celebrate.

“People ask me, like, 'What is making you go?'” Amy said. "And I’m like, 'I made a promise to a very special man.' "

A Decade-Long Promise

He had previously parasailed with his granddaughter, Kaylee, on his 80th birthday, and she was the one who suggested parasailing for his 90th birthday.

“I have to talk to Amy and see can keep me runnin’ till I’m 90 and if I make it, ‘You go with me,” he said at the time.

Kaylee said, "We’ve been talking about it, and thinking about it and planning it, and it was just fun that it got to happen. [It was] super cool to celebrate this milestone for him.”

How is the Senior So Active? Because of His Can-Do Attitude

"At my age, if they’re still alive, they’re sittin’ in a La-Z-Boy rocking. What fun is that?” said Sunny, who’s a U.S. Navy veteran. “They need to get out here and get up in the air.”

His only wish is that they had had more time in the air while the boat was pulling them across the ocean.

“To go sailing with Kaylee and Amy, what could be better than that?” he said. “There is nothing any better than that.”

Amy noted that a positive attitude makes all the difference when it comes to longevity.

“No ‘poor me,’ huh?” Sunny said

“Yeah, no woe is me with Sunny,” Amy added.

What a wonderful thing that Sunny wanted to celebrate his birthday like this. It’s amazing that his doctor would go along with him and support him like that, too. They all clearly had a great time!
