One Dad’s Backyard Ice Rink Turns Cold Weather Into Community Connection

One father in Maryland thought he’d tackle kids’ winter boredom with a special idea. The dad built an ice rink in his backyard for his three daughters. But it’s not just his daughters who love it—the whole neighborhood does.

Justin Ruff decided to take advantage of the winter storm that covered half of America this year, and everyone is glad he did. Once Justin’s neighbors got wind of the little ice rink, they couldn’t get enough.

“I knew something was up Christmas morning,” his wife, Christine, said. “I saw a pair of kids’ skates under the tree that I knew nothing about. I knew something was cooking.”

Ruff is a roofer who grew up playing hockey. He’d always wanted a backyard ice rink and seen people make their own in northern states. 

“I’m not sure how he did it,” one neighbor said. “We’re very lucky to just have the community here, to have someone that spent the time to build this. It’s just really special.”

The Whole Neighborhood Went for a Spin on the Ice

News clips show the ice rink crowded with kids and adults—they all had a blast. 

“I’m kind of amazed,” said one teen. 

“Never did I dream Annapolis, Maryland, would be possible,” Christine laughed. But Justin made it possible, thanks to some YouTube videos and work equipment. 

“It’s pretty magical,” Christine said of the neighborhood enjoying the rink. “I think everyone’s going to be ordering skates after this.”

“It’s definitely a social atmosphere,” Justin said. “We’re making the best of the weather right now.”

“This is clearly the most fun neighborhood in all of Anna Russell County,” said one woman. And she’s right.

It’s wonderful that everyone wants to come together like this and enjoy some winter fun. It’s these kinds of stories that bring warmth to our hearts on cold days.
