A Simple Shopping Trip Led This Woman to Help a 92-Year-Old Finally Retire

A simple shopping trip led this woman to help a 92-year-old finally retire. The moment April Steele stepped into a dressing room at a Burlington store in Pompano Beach, Florida, something caught her breath. Standing there on her feet, helping customers with quiet determination, was a woman who looked far older than most retail workers. Much older.

“She’s got to be in her 80s,” April thought at first. Then she learned the truth. Muriel Connick was 92 years old—and still working because she had to.

“My heart sank,” April later said. “Why is a 92-year-old woman working? It just seemed unbelievable to me.”

But for Muriel, this wasn’t a choice rooted in ambition or boredom. It was a necessity. Her Social Security check simply wasn’t enough to cover the basics—rent, car payments, insurance, and utilities. The so-called golden years had arrived heavy with worry instead of rest.

Muriel has lived a long life, but like many seniors across the country, she found herself quietly slipping through the cracks. No headlines. No handouts. Just showing up to work, day after day, because the bills didn’t stop coming. April couldn’t walk away.

She Shared Her Story, Hoping Others Will Help

After meeting Muriel, she shared her story in a local Pompano Beach Facebook group, hoping someone might know how to help. A stranger suggested starting a GoFundMe—and what happened next felt like something straight out of a kindness-filled miracle.

Within weeks, thousands of dollars began pouring in. Strangers from across South Florida—and far beyond—gave what they could. Five dollars. Fifty dollars. Messages of encouragement. Notes of gratitude for a woman they had never met but deeply respected. Muriel was stunned.

“I thought she was just going to give me a card,” Muriel said. “I didn’t know she was going to do all this.”

She Went Beyond Just Helping This Woman Retire

But the generosity didn’t stop at helping Muriel pay her bills. April also hoped to find someone who could help repair the damaged floors in Muriel’s mobile home—another burden Muriel had quietly been carrying on her own.

“How could you not want to help?” April said.

By Monday afternoon, the fundraiser had reached more than $55,000—enough to cover Muriel’s immediate needs and give her something she hadn’t had in a long time: the freedom to finally rest.

At 92 years young, Muriel is still moving forward—this time supported by the kindness of strangers who refused to look away. Sometimes, all it takes is one person noticing. One heart willing to stop. And suddenly, a woman who thought she had to carry everything alone is reminded she never truly was.

“Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.” Galatians 6:2
