At 90, Michigan Teacher’s Lifelong Dedication to Her Students Earns Guinness World Record

If anyone deserves career recognition, it’s Miss Beverly Hannett-Price of Detroit, Michigan. The teacher set the Guinness World Record for the longest female language-teaching career. Her community could not be prouder.

The teacher, who is 90 years old, was celebrated at an assembly this month, attended by staff and former students. She’s taught for 67 years.

"This historic recognition honors not only the length of Mrs. Hannett-Price’s career, but the depth of her influence on students whose achievements span the worlds of entertainment, business, and the arts," Detroit Country Day School officials said.

Two of her thousands of students are Hollywood Walk of Fame star holders Courtney B. Vance and Robin Williams. The two have shared many happy moments together, including weddings, birthdays, and Courtney’s Walk of Fame ceremony.

"She's had a lot of students, and she kept in touch with me. She knew I didn't know things coming from public school, inner city ... she befriended me,” Courtney said of the private school teacher. “So much so, when my father died of suicide, she came and sat with my mother in our house.”

“And that's when I realized this is more than just a student-teacher relationship. This is a life relationship," Courtney said

She’s Famous to Everyone Who’s Met Her

"Life is short. You find a few people to take you through the days, it's a blessing. She is an absolute blessing to my family and I am to theirs,” Courtney continued

Courtney says she is a blessing to everyone she meets. "Every day for her is a wonderful day, and she reminds us all that life is a gift."

At the ceremony, Beverly saw many videos from former students who shared how she had impacted their lives. Another of her renowned students is former CEO of Microsoft, Steve Ballmer.

"These former students frequently credit Ms. Hannett-Price’s rigorous standards, passion for language, and belief in her students as formative influences on their personal and professional success," school officials said.

Guinness World Records said Beverly "continues to teach with the same enthusiasm and energy that defined the beginning of her career. This record honors her lifelong commitment to her students, her school communities, and the teaching profession as a whole."

And… Retirement is Not in Sight

"I have never left this building or any school building that I taught in ever wanting to do anything else with my life but to teach children,” Beverly says. "I love this school. This opportunity for an education, I love. I'm ... not thinking of retiring."

She’s an active member of the school, not only in the classroom. She enjoys visiting school events like games and dances. Most of all, she loves being there for the kids.

"I listen to their stories. I listen to their worries. I listen to their joys. I love being at a game and congratulate them in the classroom the next day," she said.

In Life, Be the Best Version of Yourself

Her granddaughter, Charlotte, who attends the school, spoke at the ceremony.

"I'm glad that she was awarded, and they gave her an assembly for it. I think she deserved that recognition," Charlotte said. "All my friends, they always talk to me about her. They always come up to me in the hallways and say how they said 'hi' to my grandma and said that 'I'm friends with Charlotte.' I think she's just such a celebrity in school and outside of school, which is so special."

Miss Beverly has one thing she has always told her students: “In life, you be the best version of yourself you can possibly be because there will never be another you.”

Miss Beverly will leave that school a wonderful legacy that will be told as long as that school stands, and of course, her many students will always, always remember her.
