Special Education Teacher Plans First Overnight Trip for Special Needs Students, and it's a Blessing

A special education teacher plans a first overnight trip for special needs students, and it’s a blessing. Buckle up and grab a tissue, you are definitely going to need it. I didn’t expect a video on my screen to undo me like this.

I read this story and had to stop for a moment. The kind of stop where your chest tightens, and your eyes sting, and you whisper, “This. This is what love looks like.

An Overnight Trip for Special Needs Students Was Planned by a Special Education Teacher

In Commerce, Georgia, a special education teacher named Wes Massey saw what so many others had grown used to overlooking. He saw students who didn’t wear jerseys or cheer uniforms. Kids who watched spirit days and school milestones pass by from the sidelines. Kids whose school experience often looked quieter, smaller, more limited—not because they lacked joy, but because opportunity hadn’t always made room for them.

“A lot of our kids don’t get to participate,” Wes said. And instead of accepting that as reality, he decided to change it.

What began as a simple idea became a movement. A whole community rising up to give 31 students in the district’s special education program and their families something many had never experienced before: their first overnight trip.

He Was Able to Organize With Help Through Donations and Volunteers

Through donations, volunteers, and countless behind-the-scenes yeses, Wes organized a weekend getaway to Great Wolf Lodge. Families paid nothing.

Transportation was covered. Meals were planned. Medical needs were thoughtfully supported: oxygen tanks, feeding tubes, extra vehicles, and two charter buses ready and waiting. And even a grand send-off from law enforcement!

And when the families arrived, the generosity didn’t stop.

Students Were Empowered Through This Trip

Each student received gift cards to choose their own meals. Not just be provided for—but empowered. They built bears. Played putt-putt. Went on adventures together. For some families, it was the first time they’d done something like this together.

“I want these kids to enjoy what other kids would enjoy,” Wes said. And they did.

Teachers rearranged schedules. Volunteers gave their time. Local businesses gave resources. School leaders showed up. The county sheriff even escorted the buses across the county line—an unspoken way of saying, These kids matter to all of us.

The principal said it best: this wasn’t about one trip. It was about belonging. About giving every child “a purpose and a reason to come to school.”

And watching this unfold, you can almost hear God whispering what He’s always been saying to these families: You are included. You are important. You belong.

“I praise You because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; Your works are wonderful, I know that full well.”  Psalm 139:14
