Texas City Offers Something Special and Heartwarming With Their 'Grandma Stand'

You won't believe how this Texas city offers something special and heartwarming with their ‘Grandma Stand,’ and I think every city needs to take note! In the hustle and bustle of this loud, fast world, grandmas often get quietly left behind.

We rush past wisdom because we’re late. We scroll instead of sit. We move so quickly that we forget there is a steady, sacred thread of wisdom woven through our lives—one that doesn’t demand attention but waits patiently to be noticed.

Grandmas Are Special

That thread is a grandma.

This holiday season in McKinney, Texas, something tender is unfolding in the middle of downtown. Between twinkling lights and bundled shoppers sits The Grandma Stand—a simple booth offering comfort, connection, and free advice.

On a chilly Saturday, Grandma Nancy greets visitors with a smile and words that feel like a benediction:

“We all need a grandma… and grandmas need you.”

Nancy has four grandchildren of her own and says she was volunteered for the role by her daughter, but she’s grateful she said yes.

They Grandmas Love The Grandma Stand

“I absolutely love it,” Nancy shared. “Grandmas are nonjudgmental and loving people. Sometimes it’s nice to talk to someone who’s basically a stranger, but you still feel a connection with.”

The idea originated in 2012 in New York City, when Mike Matthews set up a booth inspired by his 95-year-old grandmother, Eileen, featuring a sign that read, “Talk to my 95-year-old grandmother.” Eileen lived to be 102, and though she passed away in 2018, her spirit remains at the heart of the project.

“This is exactly what my grandmother envisioned… all these grandmas being seen and heard,” Mike said.

You Can Find Grandma Stands Around the Country

Today, Grandma Stands exist in cities across the country, including McKinney, with plans to expand even further. No matter the location, the need remains the same: people yearn to be heard.

Mike says many visitors share that they grew up without a grandmother or lost one too early.

“I hear a lot of that,” he said. “I hope this is a catalyst for you to start building that relationship with whoever that is.”

Nancy hears everything, from heartbreak to small joys. And her advice is always simple:

“If there’s a choice between being kind and being unkind… choose kindness. And choose love. And choose patience.”

Maybe that’s why we need more grandmas these days. Not to fix everything—but to remind us we’re not alone.
