At 100, Wisconsin Navy Veteran Founded a Church and Still Serves as a Crossing Guard

Julius Campbell recently celebrated his 100th birthday, but he remains strong and has accomplished a great deal in his long life, from serving in the Navy to founding his own church. And he isn’t anywhere near done serving his community. He is a great inspiration to all of us.

The 100-year-old lives in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and has worked as a crossing guard for over 30 years, which means he began his career helping children cross the street at the age of 69. However, before that, he was a third-grade teacher.

Julius also served in the Navy, founded a church back in 1958, and received his bachelor's and master’s degrees in theology, as well as a doctorate in counseling.

He has also received many awards over the years, including one back in February, when the mayor of Milwaukee proclaimed February 22nd as “Julius Campbell Day!” “Julius Earl Campbell has dedicated 30 years to keeping Milwaukee’s children safe as a School Crossing Guard, and his service goes beyond that as a WWII Navy Veteran. At 100 years old, he continues to inspire with his unwavering commitment to our community. His legacy of service, leadership, and kindness will never be forgotten,” the caption reads.

He also received the Milwaukee Police Department’s Merit Award, called the Chief’s Superior Leadership Award, for his service in the Community Service Division.

What does Julius have to say about all this? “I am thankful for getting my flowers while I’m alive,” he says

The 100-Year-Old Crossing Guard Had a Special Birthday Party

And if all that wasn’t enough, on December 6th, his loved ones and other special guests celebrated his special birthday, including public tributes from people he had touched over the years.

At 100, one might think it would be time to sit back and enjoy retirement; however, Julius isn’t interested in that. “I don’t want to miss that love and connection to this wonderful community,” he shares.

Julius Has Given Back to His Community in So Many Ways

Beyond being a crossing guard, Julius also gives back by consulting and ministering to others. “I like to work with the young people that need guidance,” he shares. “I help families in need with books, clothing, and food programs. Serving God and the community is my hobby.”

As for the future, he aims to maintain his health, both mentally and physically, and continue to serve his community.

When asked what his secret was to making it this far, he says, “I made a promise. And I’m going to keep it until the end. If it’s possible. If it’s God’s will.” He then goes on to say, “The promise is I would do whatever he desire. What he wants me to do.”

And what a fantastic way to live your life, doing God’s will, in any way you can. What a legacy Julius is leaving the world.
