On Easter Sunday, 1972, while in Vietnam as an adviser to the South Vietnamese Marines, Colonel Ripley single-handedly destroyed a bridge near the city of !%!% Ha, blunting a major North Vietnamese offensive. For his heroism he was awarded the Navy Cross.<br />
