Thieves Target Unlocked Cars And It's On The Rise

Normally, when we think of thieves breaking into cars, we imagine them busting out the window and breaking the glass. This used to be how the majority of car thefts occurred. But nowadays, thieves are having a much easier time because they simply have to open a car door. So many people are leaving their cars unlocked and vulnerable that these burglars don’t have to make much effort anymore.

First, we see security camera footage of an unlocked car in the driveway. The robber opens the door and determines that there is nothing of value for him to take, but he does use the garage door opener inside the vehicle to open the bay. Once he is inside the garage, he finds 2 bikes that are worth his time and rides off with them.

When Inside Edition heard about the rise in thefts from unlocked cars, they decided to conduct their own investigation and the results were shocking. One reporter spent the day with the Mount Pleasant Police Department in New York State to determine how big of an issue this was.

As they walked around a crowded parking lot, they found door after door unlocked and many had valuables in plain view such as wallets or car keys. But the most shocking find was an unlocked car that was running with a child in the backseat. Anyone could’ve hopped in the car and driven off with the toddler.

This video is definitely eye opening and it’s a great reminder to always lock your car. It’s a simple thing that could change your whole life.
