American Idol Group Wear Glasses To Support Blind Teammate Shayy

Team members from Unexpected Vibes supported their blind teammate, Shayy, in an incredible way during the American Idol group performances.

It has only been one year since this high school student started to complain of vision problems. As images started to get blurry, Shayy feared that she would need to get glasses. But after a routine trip to the eye doctor, the family realized this was a much more serious issue.

Shayy was rushed to the hospital for an MRI and that’s when they discovered a tumor in her brain. After surgery, this young woman was declared legally blind. But this teen isn’t letting anything hold her back from following her dreams.

When we first met Shayy, she moved the judges to tears with her ‘Rise Up’ audition.

Now, she has made it all the way to Hollywood to continue to fight for her spot on American Idol. Part of Hollywood Week is the group performances. Individuals are placed on a team and given a completely new song to arrange and perform in front of the judges.

Learning words when you cannot see to read posed a challenge for Shayy, but her teammates made sure she had all the support and assistance to feel confident. And during their soulful performance of ‘I Want It That Way’ from The Backstreet Boys, the team all put on vision-distorting glasses.

Shayy made them for her entire group so they would have a sense of what it’s like from her perspective. It was such a touching gesture of kindness that wasn’t missed by the judges. In fact, Lionel Ritchie teared up, once again. This is what Hollywood Week is all about.
