When God Sends You a Neighbor

October 23, 2026

When God Sends You a Neighbor

When I first moved into my house, I’ll be honest, I had no idea how to take care of a home. I didn’t know what to do if something went wrong, and I quickly realized there are a lot of things that go into maintaining a house that nobody really teaches you. The previous homeowners were amazing and left behind notes about the house and the people they trusted to help keep it up, which was a huge gift. But one of the biggest blessings I didn’t see coming was the man living right next door.

A Neighbor Who Shows Up

From the beginning, my neighbor has been incredibly helpful. He’s taken me fishing, and he’s become the guy I can call when I’m unsure about something, whether it’s a Facebook Marketplace find or a question about the house. This past summer, a crack started forming on my ceiling, and I honestly wasn’t sure what to do or how worried I should be. So I called him, and he came right over to take a look. Thankfully, everything was fine, and it turned out to be mostly cosmetic, but he still had his guys come and fix it, and he did it all for free.

While he was there, we walked through the house together, and since he works in construction, he explained how a house actually works and all the things I should be paying attention to. I walked away from that day not only with a fixed ceiling but with a lot more confidence, and with the reminder of how good it is to have a neighbor who genuinely cares about you and looks out for you.

Loving Our Neighbors Well

Our friendship goes both ways. If he ever needs anything, I’m happy to watch over his place or help however I can, and he’s always checking in on me too. It’s been one of those quiet blessings in my life that I don’t want to take for granted.

When Jesus was asked about the greatest commandment, He said the second is like the first:

“Love your neighbor as yourself.” – Mark 12:31

My neighbor has truly exemplified what it looks like to live that out. He has a servant heart, and he uses what God has given him, his skills, his time, and his experience, to bless the people around him. It reminds me of what Peter wrote:

“Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms.” – 1 Peter 4:10

We’re called to be good neighbors and good stewards, and sometimes the most powerful picture of the gospel isn’t a sermon, it’s someone walking across the yard to help you with something you don’t know how to fix. Proverbs puts it simply when it says, “better a neighbor nearby than a relative far away” (Proverbs 27:10), and I’ve found that to be so true.

Reflection Questions

  1. Who has God placed near you right now that you could serve or check in on this week?

  2. What gifts, skills, or experiences has God given you that could bless someone else?

  3. Is there someone who has been a good neighbor to you that you could thank this week?
