Senior Dog Spends 5 Years Waiting for a Family Before Finally Getting His ‘Freedom Ride’

A New Jersey shelter dog finally got adopted after waiting over five years for her forever home. After Height of Hope Senior Dog Rescue realized she’d been in the shelter so long, they were able to help her get an owner. The 12-year-old pit bull, Nyla, is happy to be with her new family, with her own bed and toys.

Shelter Dog Finally Adopted After 5 Year Wait

“Nyla took her freedom ride,” Height of Hope shared with a photo of Nyla and her new owner. “Tonight, instead of a shelter kennel, she has a soft bed. Toys of her own. Hands giving her endless rubs. And a foster mom showing her what it feels like to be home.”

The total time she was in the shelter was 2,094 days. Nyla is Height of Hope’s 29th senior dog that was rescued.

Why Senior Dogs Can Spend Longer Waiting for Homes

Unfortunately, senior dogs have an adoption rate of only 25%. Meanwhile, younger dogs and puppies have a 60% adoption rate. Last year, approximately 2 million dogs were adopted. However, over 27% (542,000) were returned to their owner, and 16% (320,000) were euthanized. Older dogs and larger dogs are at greater risk of being euthanized because they are adopted less. 

Sadly, older pets often find themselves in shelters when their owners pass away. It’s important that anyone older in age or at risk keep a legal care plan for their pets. 

It’s a safety issue too. There have been times when older owners were told their pets would be cared for by family members, but in reality, the pets were neglected. Having a care plan ensures that pets have the best options if their owner can’t care for them. 

Nyla Finally Has the Loving Home She Deserves

It’s wonderful that someone saw that Nyla is still a lovable dog who would make a great pet. She certainly deserved her forever home where she is safe, comfortable, and loved.
