When I Lost My Passport in Greece

When I Lost My Passport in Greece

I recently traveled to Greece for work, and after several busy days, I had planned one single day to rest. I booked a really nice hotel for my last night, took an Uber over from my other hotel, and imagined a quiet, peaceful day before flying home. God, it turns out, had a very different lesson planned for me that day.

A Bag in the Back Seat

When the Uber pulled up, it stopped right in front of the gate outside the hotel, and two staff members were already there to greet me at the car. In all the excitement of being welcomed, I hopped out and walked inside to check in, completely forgetting about the backpack I had left sitting in the car. When the front desk asked for my passport, my stomach dropped because I suddenly realized it was in that backpack, and the Uber was already gone. And it wasn't just my passport in there, either. My laptop, my vlog camera, and even my car keys back home were all in that bag.

You would think the easiest thing to do would be to just contact the driver, but for some reason the Uber app wasn't helpful at all. Every time we tried to call, it said we couldn't be connected, almost as if the number was blocked. To make things worse, it was Saturday, my flight home was at noon the next day, and the embassy wouldn't open until Monday. I could even watch my laptop moving all around the city on Find My, which honestly made it harder, because I could see exactly where my things were and had no way to reach them.

Christina the Detective

After about two hours of trying everything we could think of, a woman named Christina, who runs the hotel, stepped in and said we were going to the authorities. We hopped in her car, and I tried my best to stay calm and collected while we drove to the police station and explained everything. Since Uber wouldn't give us any information, Christina started making call after call, and about an hour later, she had somehow tracked down the license plate number. I showed the police a picture of the driver from the app, and after about four hours of searching, they were finally able to reach him. At 7:30 that night, I had my backpack back in my hands.

What amazed me most was when Christina told me afterward that this was easy. She said she had done this five times before, and mine was the easiest one because we had a license plate and a picture, while one time she had no clues or leads at all. She was literally Wonder Woman, and I'm so thankful for her and for the people at that resort who went out of their way to help a stranger they had just met. The Greek people I met that day were incredible.

When You Have No Strength Left

My emotions that day went up and down over and over again, and the relaxing day I had planned turned into a panic day. But in the middle of it, God taught me something I don't think I would have learned any other way. There was nothing I could do to fix the situation, I couldn't reach the driver, I couldn't speed up the embassy, and I couldn't control a single part of what was happening. All I could do was trust Him.

I think so often we try to carry everything in our own strength, and it isn't until our strength runs out completely that we realize how much we need the Lord. Paul learned this too when God told him,

"My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness." – 2 Corinthians 12:9

The moments when we have nothing left to give are often the very moments when God shows up the strongest. Sometimes He shows up through a quiet peace in your heart, and sometimes He shows up through a hotel manager named Christina who refuses to give up. Isaiah reminds us of this promise:

"He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak." – Isaiah 40:29

I didn't get the restful day I planned, but I came home with something far more valuable, a deeper understanding that when I can't even rely on my own strength, I can always rely on His.

I put a picture of Christina and me at the end of this newsletter!

"Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight." – Proverbs 3:5–6

Reflection Questions

  1. Is there a situation in your life right now where you feel like you have no control?

  2. What would it look like to stop relying on your own strength and trust God with it this week?

  3. Who has God used to help you in a moment when you couldn't help yourself, and have you thanked them?
