College Student Spots 3-Year-Old Clinging to a Creek Branch and Jumps In to Save Him

A college student spots a 3-year-old clinging to a creek branch and jumps in to save him. Noah Matthews was walking near Carson-Newman University’s baseball complex in Jefferson City, Tennessee, when he noticed something in Mossy Creek.

He moved closer. There, in several feet of swiftly moving water, was a little boy clinging to a tree near the bank. The child was only three. In that moment, Noah’s walk became something far more urgent. A little boy needed help, and Noah didn’t hesitate. He pulled the child to safety and called 911.

When officers arrived on Sept. 14, they found Noah with the boy. Police learned that the child, who has autism, had wandered away from his nearby home. He was evaluated and reunited with his mother.

Those few words hold so much good news: reunited with his mother. A child who had been in dangerous water was safe enough to go back to the person who loved him.

First Responders Say His Quick Action Likely Prevented a Tragedy

First responders said Noah’s actions likely prevented a tragedy. With the water measuring about four feet deep, police told him the boy might have drowned if he hadn’t been there.

But when Noah spoke about the rescue, he pointed to God. “I feel like that was God, in His providence, putting me down here at that exact moment to make sure [the boy] didn’t come to any harm,” Noah said.

For the Carson-Newman junior studying criminology, being on that trail at that moment carried a meaning far beyond coincidence. He believed God had placed him where he could help.

And when the need appeared, he acted. Still, Noah wants people to remember that kindness matters in ordinary moments, too. We may never rescue someone from a creek, but we can pay attention, offer help, and treat the people around us with care.

Jesus Calls Us to Love Our Neighbors

Jesus calls us to love our neighbors. Noah’s story gives us a powerful picture of what that love can look like when someone’s need interrupts our plans.

Thank God this little boy was seen. Thank God Noah stopped. And thank God, a frightening afternoon ended with a child safely reunited with his mother.
