At 100 Years Old, This Pennsylvania Bowler Is Still Knocking Down Pins and Inspiring Everyone Around Him

At 100 years old, this Pennsylvania bowler is still knocking down pins and inspiring everyone around him.

This is so incredible, and it reminds us once again that aging is a gift and that life has so much to offer, no matter how old we are. William Owen Hanna of Darby Township, Pennsylvania, just turned 100, and the way he tells it, God gets every bit of the credit. "God has blessed me to live to see my 100th birthday," Owen said.

Owen has been bowling since he was a teenager, back when the game looked very different. "I started out as a pin setter," Owen recalled, remembering the days when someone had to stand behind the lanes and set every pin by hand. This week, his fellow members of the McDade Senior League at MacDade Bowl in Holmes, Pennsylvania, surprised him with a cake and a celebration to honor their oldest friend.

His story is a century long. Owen was inducted into the United States Army the very week President Roosevelt died, and he served two years in the Quartermaster Corps. He went on to work as a trucking contractor, a welder, and a diesel engine mechanic. Around 1951, he joined the First African Baptist Church of Darby Township, where he taught Sunday school and joined the deacon ministry. All these decades later, Owen is still a deacon.

A Century of Faith, Service, Family, and Friendship

Ask anyone at the bowling alley and they will tell you what kind of man he is. One friend who has known him for at least 30 years said she waits for him every Tuesday. "I wait every Tuesday for my hug," she said.

Owen's wife and three of his four daughters have passed away, but his family keeps growing. His last surviving daughter counts six grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, and 23 great-great-grandchildren who call him Big Pop-Pop.

Owen Plans to Keep Bowling as Long as the Lord Allows

And he is not done yet. "As long as the Lord will allow me to hold up that 13 or 14 lb ball... I'll keep bowling," Owen added.

A hundred years of faith, family, and Tuesdays at the lanes. Owen is still bearing fruit, and every pin at MacDade Bowl knows it.
