He Went Out for a Run, and Ended Up Saving an Elderly Woman Calling Out For Help

He went out for a run and ended up saving an elderly woman who was calling out for help. Sometimes the smallest choices—waking up early, tying on running shoes, choosing a route we rarely take—can become the backdrop for God’s divine appointments. That’s what happened to Randy, a man from Pocatello, who never imagined his morning jog would turn into a life-saving mission.

“I woke up at 5, which is not unusual for me,” Randy wrote. “But usually I’m still tired and I read a little and go back to sleep. This morning, I felt wide awake and decided to exercise and do my run much earlier than normal. Also, I decided to run a route that I rarely do.”

Randy Heard a Woman Calling For Help

Somewhere along Primrose, in the quiet of morning, Randy heard what he thought was a child yelling at a dog. He could’ve ignored it, but something nudged him to turn around. He recounted, “There, lying on the cement at the bottom of her stairs, was an older lady, about 90. She was waving at me and yelling, ‘Help me.’ I ran over and her exact words were, ‘I’ve fallen and I can’t get up.’”

She had gone out to take her garbage to the street and check her mail, but her foot caught on a garden hose. She had been lying on the cement for 45 minutes—alone, waiting, praying for help. Randy gently lifted her, helped her slowly into her house, and listened as she expressed gratitude through tears. “She expressed gratitude to no end, and I was grateful, too, to be able to help her,” Randy said. “When I pray, I ask Heavenly Father to help me help others, so I am grateful that I could be there to help.”

He Didn’t Normally Run By Her House

What are the odds? Early morning. A rare route. A runner who usually would’ve stayed in bed. Yet we know it wasn’t chance—it was providence. God placed Randy in the right place at the right time to be someone’s hero.

It is such a blessing to live in a world where people like Randy listen to those holy nudges, where ordinary moments become extraordinary mercies. In a culture often rushing past the needs of others, Randy reminds us that kindness still runs deep, that love can be as simple as noticing someone waving for help, and that God still sends answers through the footsteps of everyday people.

God Still Writes Stories of Rescue

The email nominating Randy for a Feel Good Friday Surprise said it best: “I feel like Randy deserves it. He is an excellent dude!” And he is. But maybe more than that, he is proof that God still writes stories of rescue through the willing hearts of His people.

Because sometimes, the very prayer we pray—Lord, help me help others—becomes the answer to someone else’s prayer, whispered from the ground in the stillness of morning.
