Girl Who's Headed To Medical School At 13 Shares Some Words of Wisdom

13-year-old Alena Analeigh Wicker is not like other kids her age. This young teen has already graduated high school and has been accepted to medical school!

"I'm still a normal 13-year-old," Alena said in a recent interview. But this bright student is on an education track that takes most people twice her age to reach.

Alena graduated high school last year at the age of 12, and she is currently a student at both Arizona State University and Oakwood University. There, she is earning two separate undergraduate degrees in biological sciences.

And just a year after graduating high school, Alena has been accepted to a medical school program!

"I've worked so hard to reach my goals and live my dreams. Mama, I made it," Alena shared on Instagram.

Alena was accepted into the Burroughs Wellcome Scholars Early Assurance Program at the University of Alabama at Birmingham's Heersink School of Medicine.

And that’s not the only impressive thing that Alena has accomplished! She also created The Brown STEM Girl, to engage, empower and educate girls of color in STEM -- science, technology, engineering and mathematics. According to the website, The Brown STEM Girl Foundation honors the legacy of Katherine Johnson, a trailblazer for African-American mathematicians at NASA.

Alena attributes her success at such a young age to hard work and other skills that she has honed.

"I just have extremely good time management skills and I'm very disciplined," she shared.

She also has so much gratitude for her mother, Daphne McQuarter, and all that she has sacrificed for her over the years.

“You always believed in me. You allowed me space to grow and become, make mistakes without making me feel bad. And you allowed me the opportunity to experience the world,” Alena writes to her mom in an Instagram post. “I pray God blesses me so big you never ever have to want for anything in this earthly life.”
