7 Great Tips To Fight Loneliness Today
February 08, 2015

It doesn’t matter how much money you have or don’t have. It doesn’t matter where you live or go to school. It even doesn’t matter if you are surrounded by people all the time. Loneliness knows where to find us and how to bring us down if we let it. As followers of Jesus Christ, we are called to be comforters of those who are lonely. Yet even Christians struggle with loneliness at different seasons of our lives. Learn from the 7 great tips to fight loneliness today:
Tip #1) Remember we are not alone
“The Lord himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged” (Deuteronomy 31:8).
It is possible to be alone, but not be lonely. We have our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, who promised to be with us always. When we struggle with loneliness we must reevaluate our relationship with Him asking the question: have I neglected the Lord? Draw near to Jesus and He will draw near to us; therefore, driving out loneliness from our lives.
Tip #2) Find a church home
“Not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching” (Hebrews 10:25).
There are many believers who resist joining a local community of Christians. Unfortunately this places us in a state of disobedience to God’s command. It also sets us up to become lonely as we need other believers in our lives. Church isn’t just a place where we receive encouragement, but also a place where we give encouragement to others. There’s no room for loneliness when our gifts are used by God to help others in the faith.
Tip #3) Get involved in our home, work, school, or community
“We hear that some among you are idle and disruptive. They are not busy; they are busybodies” (2 Thessalonians 3:11).
Lack of involvement in our community can also foster an environment of loneliness. None of us are randomly placed on this earth for God puts His people exactly where He wants to use them for His purpose and plan. Therefore we have an obligation to engage in each our communities. We are to do more than just take up space, in this way loneliness will find no place in our hearts.
Tip #4) Pray for God to lead good friends our way
“God sets the lonely in families, he leads out the prisoners with singing; but the rebellious live in a sun-scorched land” (Psalm 68:6).
The Lord knows our hearts and desires for godly friends, companions, or future spouses. God wants us to not only know Jesus more intimately, but also to know other people this way. When we pray for friends, we must be open to those people God sends who may be different from us. There’s great joy in shared laughter and sorrow with those we’ve bonded ourselves in spirit and mind—loneliness has no part of this beautiful intertwining of souls.
Tip #5) Seek out a hobby or skill that may interest us
“Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with all your might, for in the realm of the dead, where you are going, there is neither working nor planning nor knowledge nor wisdom” (Ecclesiastes 9:10).
Some of us struggle with loneliness because we haven’t found our niche in life yet. We aren’t sure of our spiritual or natural gifts. Yet even if we don’t know—the Lord knows us better than we know ourselves. When we ask God to reveal our hidden desires and breathe life into them with action—we find fulfillment in life even when we are alone. The liberating insight of our giftedness drives out the lonely spirit.
Tip #6) Resist satanic or worldly influences over our minds
“Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. 8 Come near to God and he will come near to you” (James 4:7-8).
Satan and the world capitalize on the lonely-hearted. They make everything that God calls evil—look good to those who struggle with loneliness. Satan attacks our minds with self-pity and the world makes us feel left out if we don’t concede to worldliness. However, through the power of the Holy Spirit and the word of God, we can drive out such thoughts with speaking and acting on truth. Loneliness can’t take any ground in our minds against the scriptures.
Tip #7) Volunteer in a social agency or not-for-profit group on a regular basis
“Defend the weak and the fatherless; uphold the cause of the poor and the oppressed” (Psalm 82:3).
What if all the lonely people in our community gathered together to feed the hungry, tutor children in poverty stricken areas, or provide the necessary means for widows and single parents? When we put our own loneliness aside to serve in our communities (even those not church related)—we have an opportunity to let the light of Christ shine. By making it a commitment and not just a one-time event, we discipline ourselves to keep loneliness at bay as we serve others.
Let Go of Loneliness
We may have times of loneliness; yet we must give diligent effort to fight it in the strength, energy, and faithfulness given to us by the Holy Spirit. Each of us is a part of the body of Christ and together we can ministry to the lonely. Let it go today.
