Born in the Middle of World War I, This 108-Year-Old is Still Going Strong

A woman in California turned 108 years old in December. What’s her secret to long life? No complaining.

The 108-year-old woman, Miriam Lowe, hasn’t lost any of her interest in life over the years.

“I bet most of the people you deal with are old,” she told a reporter. “They complain… You can ask any one of these [people],” she said, pointing around the room, “whether I complain. No!”

Miram was born in 1917 during World War I. She married her spouse, Irving, and was united with him for 60 years, until he passed away. They shared three children together.

Miram also built a large accounting practice and served as a CPA until she retired at age 100. “He was a good guy, and I was a good girl,” she said.

108 and an Online Gamer to Boot

Most older people are avoidant of technology, but not Miriam. She loves learning about new things, including technology. In fact, one of her hobbies is playing bridge online.

“I wouldn’t even tell ‘em about bridge,” she joked. “We did so poorly. The last two weeks have been awful.”

She used to love to travel and enjoys reading. “There are a lot of places that I want [to go],” she said. “I made reservations to India four times. Never got there,” she said mournfully. “Had to cancel every time.”

‘A Joy’ to Be Around

Miriam isn’t one for retirement homes, but she has a team of people who help her.

“Miram, it’s always a joy to meet with her,” said one of her caretakers. “She always wants to ask questions and learn about new things.”

Another American woman, Eloise Michaels West, also born in 1917, celebrated her 108th birthday this year. She’s a little older than Miriam because she was born in August. Like Miriam, she’s got a lot of tenacity.

"You will have to live your own life," Eloiise said earlier this year. "I don't care what I want people to know. Everybody's got to live their life their way. They can't imitate nobody. You're gonna have to stand on your own."

It’s clear that Miriam is a bright and spunky soul who hasn’t given up on anything. We can all learn a thing or two from her—and go through life without complaining!
