Charles Lyell's book, Principles of Geology began the acceptance of evolution by society. Lyell believed tha the Bible was simply a collection of Jewish fables. It was this book in fact that influenced the thoughts of Charles Darwin. It was Lyell's idea of an evolving earth that set the stage for Darwin's evolving animals.
