High School Students Form Special Bond With Seniors Through Chair Volleyball Games

In Belton, Texas, high school students bond with seniors through fun matches of chair volleyball. It’s a beautiful—and competitive—relationship between teens and the elderly. It’s a wonderful way for everyone to get their muscles moving.

The senior members, who reside at the Belton The Woodland Cottages, call themselves “The Hit Squad” and regularly team up against the local female high school team.

“We just laugh and laugh when we practice,” said Hit Squad member Charlotte Wheeler.

The senior members are very supportive of the team and even attended one of the girls’ matches, giving them a nice surprise. And during the girls’ Senior Night celebration, the ladies made goodie bags for each senior member of the high school team.

Smiles and Joy All Around

If you take just one look at the photos of the two groups, that should be enough to convince you that these seniors and high schoolers are experiencing great joy through this program.

It Offers Benefits for Everyone

“I’m ready to get some wisdom and skills from those who know more than I do,” said high schooler Thia Allsion.

The girls even visit the members outside of their chair matches from time to time, which I’m sure the seniors enjoy.

“After word of the matches spread across campus, the undefeated Lady Broncos basketball team asked to schedule their own chair volleyball game with residents,” the high school team said.

This relationship with the seniors has given them more physical activity, social engagement, a sense of purpose, and something to look forward to.

And for the high school team, they have more support than ever. If they don’t have cheerleaders already, “The Hit Squad” would be ready and willing to become “The Cheer Squad,” I’m sure!
