Woman with Severe Traumatic Brain Injury Wakes Up Married to a Man She Doesn't Remember

A woman with a severe traumatic brain injury wakes up married to a man she doesn’t remember.
This sad love story between Laura Faganello and her husband Brayden began in 2015. Brayden’s cousin attended school with Laura at the University of Victoria. These cousins set them up for a date and the rest became history.

Neither could have expected the history of their relationship being compromised after Laura’s accident.
Back then they ended up exchanging letters and emails to one another while Brayden performed mission work in South Africa and Laura studied abroad. After time apart, the two came together, and in July 2016 found themselves exchanging vows.
Following Laura's 2017 semester in school, she was helping decorate for a friend’s outdoor event. While in the process of helping out, a pole on the scene fell on her head. The outcome was tragic.
Laura’s severe traumatic brain injury was coupled with a damaged spine that has proven to be very painful.
Following the incident, Laura remarked her life was like living in a fog.
“My next clear memory is of waking up thinking I was 17 years old, and not knowing who Brayden was. My memory of meeting, falling in love with, and marrying Brayden was gone.”
Her injury has left her with short-term and long-term memory loss. She has been relearning reading, writing, and speech.
“I felt like so much had been ripped away from me. I desperately hoped my memory would come back, that some day I would look at Brayden and remember everything. Unfortunately that has yet to happen.”

Laura did consider ending the relationship with the man she was once fond of, but now cannot remember.
“Even though I didn’t really know who Brayden was, I saw how kind and patient he was with me. He was sweet and silly and quirky, and I wanted to try to make it work. I took off my rings, and I told him I wanted to date him. So, we started dating again.”
“Brayden became my best friend, and then my crush, and then my love. I haven’t miraculously gotten my memory and all my old feelings for him back, but I have new feelings and new memories. I’ve learned that love is a choice, and I am choosing to love Brayden.”
In August of 2019, Brayden proposed again and Laura said yes. And the two have been regrowing their love since.
“We have learned that love is a choice, and we are choosing to love each other, again. He has supported me through my highs and lows, and has shown me the meaning of unconditional love. We have turned the hardest trial of our life into the most beautiful blessing: the opportunity to fall in love with each other a second time,” Laura shared.
And she’s right. Love is a choice. Everyday we have an opportunity to share the love of Christ with one another. The question is, will we take that opportunity?
