Mommy Instincts Kicked In And Pregnant Driver Got Kids To Safety As School Bus Caught Fire
June 05, 2023

A pregnant school bus driver is being hailed as a hero after she whisked dozens of students to safety seconds before the vehicle went up in flames.
Driving is dangerous and can often be a deadly activity. Thousands of people are killed in motor vehicle accidents every single year. Wearing a seatbelt, adhering to driving laws and avoiding the cell phone can help to better ensure a safe ride. But what do you do when the vehicle you are driving bursts into flames? That’s one situation rarely, if ever, mentioned in driver’s education.

Nevertheless, that is the exact predicament Imunek Williams, a Milwaukee school bus driver, found herself in one weekday morning, according to WISN 12 News. Imunek, who is 8 months pregnant, was hours into her morning bus routine when something felt or rather smelt off.
The strange odor coming from the bus only kept growing. That’s when Imunek attempted to use her radio to alert dispatch about the situation. However, the increasing smoke was becoming too much for Imunek, who admits it was becoming impossible to talk, according to WTMJ-TV.

Despite being unable to alert dispatch, Imunek knew she had to get the students off the bus.
"I think that's when it was like my mommy instincts kicked in really fast and I was just like, ‘OK, come on, mom. Let's do it, let's get off the bus,"’ Imunek said.
The School Bus Driver's Quick Actions Saved Herself and the 37 Students From Injury
Imunek stated that after evacuating the 37 children from the bus, she made them line up. But seconds after all the children and Imunek got off the bus, she witnessed a chilling scene.
“I evacuated the bus, made sure everyone was off, and made them line up against the gate,” Imunek said. “And as soon as we stepped off the gate, I turned around, and the bus was just in flames.”
