90-Year-Old Woodcutter Decided to Build His Very Own Hobbit House Building and It's Incredible

Stuart Grant may be 90 years old, but he is ever so young at heart. He built his very own Hobbit House building and has attracted visitors from all over the world.

The seed for the Hobbit House building was planted in 1984, when Stuart bought an abandoned cottage in the hills of Tomich, Scotland, right near the natural paradise Inverness. Stuart’s off-the-grid cottage began as a shoemaker’s cottage and croft, built almost 200 years before.

“There was no roof, just four walls which are 200 years old. It is not a fancy house, it is made from other people’s leftovers,” said Stuart.

The challenge of renovating a barely-standing house would be daunting to most people. But Stuart, who had worked as a carpenter and joiner for years, was excited by the task.

“I cut the wood myself from fallen trees and collected stones from the river for the stonework. I put the stairs in. It took quite a few years, I never counted it. I just enjoyed doing it so much—I was getting such a buzz out of doing it.”

Amazing Hobbit House Building

The Hobbit House building is a sight to behold, with a greenhouse, curved staircase, thatched roof, and fish pond. Small knick-knacks and handmade carvings and quilts are everywhere, and the wood fire oven keeps the Scottish rain at bay.

The labor that went into building the house wasn’t the only thing that drew Stuart Grant to this project. The natural beauty of the Scottish Highlands was a real treat.

Known for its rolling hills dotted with sheep nestled within the lush mountains and mile-wide lochs, the Scottish Highlands is known as one of the most beautiful places in the United Kingdom. As a self-proclaimed “glutton for scenic beauty, beautiful houses, and thatched cottages,” Stuart found the perfect place to live.

Soon after he finished building the Hobbit House, tourists started visiting by the busload, but Stuart didn't mind. He doesn’t use the Internet, and he can no longer drive due to his age, but he enjoys meeting new people and showing his visitors his cozy home.
