A couple delivers their own baby girl at a stoplight, not making it to the hospital in time. Here in Nebraska, we measure everything by hours, or as we like to say, “As the crow flies.” And usually when labor pains start, we assume we have hours to get to the hospital and that we will make it on time. But that hasn't happened to this Fremont couple, who live about 45 minutes from the hospital in Omaha.

They were so close to the hospital, but not close enough. David Larvick-Rounds recalls clearly when his wife, Madison, demanded, “Get out right now! The baby’s coming.” Madison remembers the 9-1-1 operator telling her to push, and she couldn’t believe they were a mere few hundred yards from the hospital, but that didn’t stop their sweet, precious baby girl from making her unusual debut into the world.

“I think I pushed once and she was out,” Madison said.

Weighing in at just over six pounds, their daughter was a mix of spicy and spunky and ready to come into the world on her own terms. And honestly, isn’t that exactly how some little girls enter the world? Full of personality before they even take their first breath.

Within moments, first responders and hospital staff rushed to help the new parents, but the baby girl had already stolen the show with her dramatic arrival at a stoplight just outside the hospital doors. One day, this sweet little Nebraska baby will probably roll her eyes hearing the story for the hundredth time, while her parents laugh about how she quite literally could not wait one more second to make her grand entrance.

But for now, everyone is simply celebrating a healthy mama, a healthy baby, and a story this family will tell for the rest of their lives. Because sometimes life’s most beautiful moments don’t happen according to our carefully laid plans. Sometimes they happen amid chaos, adrenaline, panic, and unexpected joy.

And somehow, those are the stories we never forget.
