6-Year-Old Has Heartfelt Plea About Violence: 'God Is My Weapon'

6-Year-Old's Plea For Peace Is A Message For All

It's sad, but sometimes kids have more sense than adults. And while Jeffrey Cheatham hasn't been on this earth very long, he's already seen the devastation violence can bring. And this 6-year-old's plea to rely on God rather than weapons is something everyone should hear.

It's nothing out of the ordinary for Leanndra Cheatham to pull out her phone and record her son, Jeffrey. But one night, he started talking about violence. And she couldn't believe what she was hearing!

"People need to stop killing each other," Jeffrey said.

The 6-year-old's plea for peace came after Leanndra's 17-year-old cousin was shot and killed in a drive-by shooting. But Leanndra had no idea the terrible incident had impacted her son so much.

"Jeffrey saw me really sad when my cousin died. I didn't know he remembered or even listened when I talked about the death of my cousin," she said.

We so often underestimate just how much little eyes and ears notice. The tender boy knew his mom was hurting. And it's heartbreaking to hear a little boy trying to make sense of such unnecessary violence.

"I'm scared because I've seen my Mama's cousin, he's a little boy ... and he got killed standing outside of school ... And I feel bad about people killing each other."

I think we'd all agree no child should have to worry about such grown-up things. Even Jeffrey recognizes he's too young to know about guns and violence. But in a fallen world, evil doesn't respect the innocence of children.

The terrible incident left Jeffrey fearing for his life and the lives of his loved ones.

"I'm scared to die, and I'm really scared for my family to die." he said.

'God Is My Weapon'

But it's clear God is working in this little boy. And He used him to deliver a powerful message for all of us.

"God loves you with all of His heart. God died for you."

Jeffrey then goes on to encourage people to turn to Jesus instead of violence.

"And Jesus, He's going to help you. He'll make sure you're alright. God is my weapon," he said.

This little angel is wise beyond his years. And hearing God's truth spill out of this precious boy is powerful.

It hit Leanndra so hard, she decided to post the 6-year-old's plea for peace on Facebook. And the impact it's having just shows God's Hand at work.

"A man in Birmingham reached out to me and told me he didn't shoot someone in retaliation after seeing my son speak in the video," Leanndra said.

She also shared a message she received from a gang member who says gang life is all he's ever known, but Jeffrey's words really touched him.

The evil in this fallen world can be overwhelming at times. But Jeffrey's words remind us to cling to a child-like faith. To rely on God no matter how terrible the circumstances -- no matter how dark the storm. Just as Jeffrey says, God will keep you safe. He will see you through.

"For you, O Lord, are my hope, my trust, O Lord, from my youth. Upon you I have leaned from before my birth; you are he who took me from my mother's womb. My praise is continually of you." Psalm 71:5-6
