10 Powerful Quotes From The Movie Courageous
October 01, 2014

I’m sure you have noticed the influx of Christian movies, or Christian themed movies that have spread throughout the nation’s movie theaters in the last handful of years. Christianity, for the most part, has seemed to grow into the consciousness of the culture; from the Bible T.V series to Christian rapper, Lecrae’s number one album, Anomaly—Christians are finally entering into the larger context of the culture, and it’s a great thing. One such movie that has done this, quite effectively I might add, is Courageous. If you have not seen it, I highly encourage you to do so. As a teaser, here are 10 powerful quotes from the movie Courageous.
10. "You know, if fathers just did what they're supposed to do half of the junk that we face on the streets wouldn't exist."
The movie is very much themed around fatherhood. What makes a good father? How important is it to have a father in your life? The movie asks these questions, and then easily solves that equation—yes, fathers are important in a child’s life!
9. "You are a rich man. You have a strong faith, children that love you...and a wife that adores you."
What is the measure of wealth? Is it how much stuff you have, the cars your drive, or how beautiful your husband, wife, or kids are? Courageous says not so fast. The true measure of wealth, according to the movie, is a strong relationship with the Lord, then the family that you have around you. If you have that, you are very rich indeed!
8. "I'm accepting the fact that I have to learn how to do the hard things. There is so much in scripture about being a father, I never took time to look it up."
Men need to step up and start during the hard things. When something is difficult, that does not mean you run away and hide. Much of the times, men must face it and embrace it. Yes, spending time with your family in the midst of work, ministry, and everything else that tugs on you can be difficult—but it’s time to suck it up and start loving your family and your kids. Put down the T.V remote, forget about the “me-time” that you so desperately need, and start sacrificing for your wife and kids.
7."Part of being a man is about taking responsibility"
Got that right! You may disagree with me, and you have every right to do so, but as a young man about to be married, I feel the huge weight of responsibility for caring for my soon-to-be bride. It is not her responsibility to put food in our cabinets and a roof over our head—it is mine. Yes, she will help me and contribute in more ways than I can count, but at the end of the day it is my responsibility. If something goes wrong and we are out of food or clothing, it’s on me. I vowed to protect and care for her—my responsibility.
6. "I'm learning that God wants me to call out the man in my son."
Fathers, teach your sons how to be a real man. Actually speak to them about it. Don’t just show them, tell them. It’s important for it to be spoken. I’ve encountered so many young boys during my course of youth ministry that just didn’t know what it meant to be a man. They thought it meant being tough, dating women, and making money. No! Being a man means being humble, loving women like Christ would, and being sacrificial in giving and in time.
5." Dylan, we're all hurting. What we can't do is block each other out. We need each other."
For those going through difficult times, this is a good reminder that we are built for community. Families need to comfort one another, and that includes church families, too.
4. "I love you buddy. You're my son, and I am proud of you. Don't you ever forget that."
Fathers, make sure your sons and daughters here these words early and often in their lives. Don’t just assume they know—tell them!
3. "I don't feel like I've started well, but I want to finish well."
Are you in the same boat? If so, don’t worry! It’s never too late to turn your life over to the Lord and it’s never too late to determine to be a great father (or mother!). The best time to start is now!
2." I don't want to be a good enough father."
Although this is spoken in the context of Fatherhood, it is true for all of life. Don’t settle for just getting by or for “good enough.” Rise above those expectations and set the bar higher. Be a great father, mother, or student, not just a good enough one.
1. " I'm a new man because of Christ."
If you truly accepted Christ as your Lord and Savior, a change within you should come. Nobody that truly experiences the Lord stays the same. So, have you changed at all? Have you become more Holy?
Conclusion
Please, watch this movie if you have not. It’s a well-done movie, and not just in terms of Christian movies. It’s powerful, emotional, and very inspirational. Have a family movie night...every member of the family will benefit!
