In the Willis Clan new video 'Speak My Mind,' the siblings join together once again to write and perform their music. Their latest album comes a year after their father's prison sentence for child abuse. Now the Tennessee family, known for their TLC television show “The Willis Family” and their musical performances, are sharing their healing moments through song.
After their father's conviction left them reeling, the Willis Family turned to music as a way of healing.
"We were just writing [the songs] for therapeutic reasons," said Jeremiah Willis, 25. "And after enough of those songs have been written by various members of the band we realized, 'This is good for us. I wonder if it can help other people.'"
More victims of abuse are beginning to surface in society. So, the family thought their experiences and lyrics may be an encouragement to others who are struggling to find healing. It is often scary to speak up about abuse. Victims fear they will be shunned.
The song 'Speak My Mind' comes to us from the eldest daughter, Jessica Willis. She also spoke out about the abuse she suffered at the hands of her father. She has taken time off from the family musical group while she goes through her own version of healing and recovery.
But the powerful lyrics she penned act as a voice for those who may feel conflicted about whether they should speak up against their abuser.
“This will probably stay locked away, And only come out on a rainy day, ‘Cause I will probably go, And never show, Every little thing I want you to know. If I speak my mind, Will you take the time, Will you try to find a way? If I take you there, will you say you care, Will you understand and say, There’s gotta be more courage I can find, to speak my mind”
Our prayers go out as The Willis Clan works to move on from this tragedy. Hopefully, the powerful album will inspire and encourage other victims.
"You can live beyond any traumatic experience. And you can live a life that is full of joy and peace and just happiness," Jennifer Willis McDowell said to the Chicago Tribune.
