An Indie Bookstore Asked for Help, What Happened Next Will Warm Your Heart
April 29, 2025

Sometimes, the Kingdom of God looks like casseroles on countertops, sunlit pages by a garden window, and places like Serendipity Books where books create stories and bonds—one hand to another, soul to soul. An Indie bookstore asked for help; what happened next will warm your heart.
Something divine unfolded in the sweet, small town of Chelsea, Michigan, where lilacs bloom by weathered fences and everyone knows your favorite pie at the corner diner. Michelle Tuplin, the heart behind Serendipity Books, faced the impossible. Her beloved bookstore needed to move. The new location was just 350 feet away—but with tight margins and no moving crew in sight, Michelle risked having to close shop for days.
The Store Was So Grateful For All the Help

"Grateful doesn’t even begin to express how we are feeling," the store posted afterward. But the gratitude began long before the books left their shelves.
When Michelle took to social media to ask for help, 300 people answered. They didn’t just come with boxes and strong arms. They came with memories, questions, shared tears, and sacred joy. Because when you live long enough, you know that love often looks like sweat on a Saturday and the ache of a story held in your hand.
It Was a Joyful Experience
"It was just a joyful experience," said Donna Zak, one of the volunteers. "We were passing the books and noticing and commenting to each other, 'Oh, have you read this one? I really enjoyed this one!'"
Isn’t that the Church?
Not just pews and steeples but people in jeans and windbreakers, standing in April sunshine, forming a body to pass on truth and goodness. A modern-day upper room right there on Main Street, minus the loaves and fish but filled with hardcover blessings.

Love Was Shared at Serendipity Books
I imagine Jesus walking by, pausing, smiling. Because He knows what Michelle knows, what Donna knew, what every woman who’s ever baked a pie for a grieving neighbor knows:
Love is most alive when it’s shared.
That morning, it wasn’t just books moving. It was testimony. It was a reminder that community still matters, that we are not alone in our endeavors, and that when we show up for one another, we mirror Christ Himself.
People Show Up
"People really consider independent bookstores theirs," Michelle said. "It’s really a part of the community, and they have ownership."
Yes. Like how we feel about our churches, kitchen tables, gardens, and faith. We water them. We sow them. We show up.
And in just two hours, not only were the books alphabetized on brand-new shelves, but something else had been reordered too: our faith in each other.
The new Serendipity Books, now twice the size of the old, is officially open, but the opening was already complete for the community who helped move it.
It happened the moment one friend asked another, "Have you read this one?" and love passed, hand to hand.
