The Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Detectors Were Frequently Triggered

Samantha Griffin, a 38-year-old social worker, had recently moved into a new apartment with her niece and Luna, a dog she had rescued from Speedway Animal Rescue just nine months earlier. Though their new home seemed perfect at first, Samantha noticed that the smoke and carbon monoxide detectors were frequently triggering. Assuming the alarms were malfunctioning, they remained unaddressed.

On June 24, Luna’s instinctive behavior took on a new urgency. Samantha, who was alone with Luna, began experiencing an unusually severe migraine—a condition she was familiar with but never accompanied by such intense distress from her dog. Instead of being her usual calm self, Luna was frantic and persistent, desperately trying to get Samantha outside.

“Luna was acting in a way I had never seen before,” Samantha said. “She scratched at doors, pounced on me, and tried everything she could to get me out of the apartment.” Recognizing something was seriously wrong, Samantha followed Luna outside and called for help.

Samantha Alerted the Maintenance Staff 

Samantha alerted the maintenance staff, who quickly contacted the local fire department. When responders arrived, they discovered a dangerous carbon monoxide leak in the apartment, reaching deadly levels. Samantha later learned that a bird's nest had blocked the flue of her building's gas water heater, causing the perilous buildup of carbon monoxide. The leak had gone unnoticed due to the silent nature of the gas and the malfunctioning detectors. The outcome could have been tragic if not for Luna’s divine intervention.

"Luna did save my life that day. If she hadn't gotten me out, I definitely probably would have fallen asleep and just died," Samantha said.
