On August 10th, an Oregon teenager, Paige Wood,16, was driving in her pickup truck when she had a horrible accident. She was heading towards Crook County, Oregon, when she fell asleep at the wheel. According to the Oregon State Police, she crossed the center line, struck a guardrail, and hit a tree head-on.
The 16-year-old volleyball player broke both of her ankles and received internal lacerations to her liver as well as retinal damage. Because of blood clots traveling to her heart and brain, doctors had to put her in a medically induced coma. She also lost blood flow to her left leg, and there was a chance that they might have to amputate.

Paige was an active person and a 3-sport athlete. “One of the first questions I asked the surgeons was, ‘I know when she wakes up, one of her first questions will be, am I going to be able to walk again?’” Paige’s mom, Heidi Wood, shares.
When she asked that question, the doctors didn’t have an answer. But a month later, they believe she will be able to walk again, although it will be a long road. Paige came out of the coma and is now in a wheelchair.
And while her accident has changed her life forever, her family and community are standing with her with love and support. She has also received support from teams and businesses from around the country. From letters and messages to prayers for her family.
“My mom and dad are my biggest supporters,” she said. “I think the most special thing is that they’re there for me through everything. Knowing I’m going to be able to walk again, and they’re going to be there to help me, is really important.”
Paige was discharged from the hospital earlier than expected, and her family is remodeling their home to accommodate her new mobility needs.
In an interview with KPTV Fox 12, Paige shares that her leg surgery scars are a permanent part of her story. “I think it shows that no matter what, as long as you hold your faith strong, you can get through anything.”
