Born in 1918, This 108-Year-Old Woman Has No Plans of Slowing Down Anytime Soon

One woman born in 1918 is still going strong in Dover, Delaware. She’s 108 years old, exercises every day, and still drives. She’s an astonishment to all who know her with every year that goes by.

Susan Young Browne grew up during segregation on a farm without running water or electricity. In the 40s, she attended Delaware State College for Colored Students and spent 30 years teaching in Delaware.

"When I retired and I walked around that classroom for 30 years,” she thought. “I am not going to sit down," and she certainly hasn’t. Every morning, she does a 20-minute exercise routine and attends a group exercise class at the Modern Maturity Center in Dover three times a week.

She’s visited the center since 1973 and is one of the organization’s first members. The center gave her a reserved parking spot for those over 100.

A Birthday Party to Remember

Her 108th birthday party had over 130 attendees, including Delaware Gov. Matt Meyer.

Susan was married twice in her lifetime.

The 108-year-old jokes, "I guess I'm not great material for men. That was enough. I'm not taking care of another man." But she still has plenty of family, including several children and great-grandchildren.

One of her family’s favorite things is her famous 7-Up pound cake, which they enjoy on special occasions and which Susan herself makes.

It’s just incredible that Susan has lived as long as she has. She’s lived through the last part of WWI and WWII, and that’s not something many people can say. Her cheerful and light-hearted spirit and determination to stay healthy keep her going. I know she is a true inspiration to everyone she meets.

A Prayer for Those Struggling to Love Their Neighbor - Your Daily Prayer - May 28

In the New Testament, Jesus affirmed that the greatest commandments were to love the Lord and to love one’s neighbor (Mark 12:30-31). A person’s neighbor included not only those who lived nearby, but also those who were quite different in regard to ethnicity, nationality, and location, as the parable of the Good Samaritan shows (Luke 10:25-37).
